Prevention of Infectious Disease

At South Shore Hospital, our team of providers are dedicated to preventing and treating infectious diseases.  Infectious agents can enter your body and be spread in a multitude of ways, including:  airborne germs, skin contact, ingestion of contaminated food or water, direct contact with body fluids of an infected person, direct contact with contaminated objects, or from direct contact with infected animals.

Protect Yourself

In most cases, simple, preventative measures can be taken to reduce or prevent illness including regular vaccines and yearly flu shots.   The best way to protect yourself from germs is to steer clear of the things that can spread them. Cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze and cover your mouth when you cough to keep from spreading germs.  Remember the two words germs fear - soap and water. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), washing your hands with soap and water is one of the best ways to prevent infectious disease. Wash your hands every time you cough or sneeze, before you eat or prepare foods, after you use the bathroom, after you touch animals and pets, after you play outside and after you visit a sick friend or relative. Boil water if you don't know that is it safe to consume and make sure food is fresh and has been stored properly.

Get vaccinated. Immunization can drastically reduce your chances of contracting many diseases. Make sure to keep up to date on your recommended vaccinations, as well as your family.

South Shore Hospital is no stranger to successfully managing emerging infectious diseases—most recently the flu surge in 2013 that significantly affected hospitals across the nation, as well as the 2009 H1N1 virus outbreak.   The amazing collaboration between SSH colleagues during both outbreaks proved that our multidisciplinary approach to preemptive planning and preparedness left no department  immune to thinking creatively and maximizing efforts for excellence in care.
