Maternity Team
There are many members of our maternity team who will care for you:
- Admitting registrars on the birthing unit will greet you on arrival and quickly process your admission.
- Physicians and midwives will assist you during labor,
birth and after delivery.
South Shore Hospital’s department of obstetrics and gynecology provides 24/7 on-site physician coverage. Family practices and nurse midwife practices also provide coverage within their practice. - Nurses in the birthing unit provide support, coaching and technical monitoring during your labor and birth.
- Anesthesiologists are available 24/7 for pain relief during labor and birth.
- Neonatologists (physicians specializing in the care of newborns) are available if your baby needs immediate medical intervention.
- Nurse Practitioners collaborate with neonatologists in caring for ill or premature babies and offer teaching and support in the care of all newborns.
- Nurses in the mother/infant unit provide a comprehensive approach to care for you and
your baby. - Pediatricians care for your baby during your hospital stay and beyond.
- Lactation specialists support you with any breastfeeding issues.
- An infant massage therapist is on the unit three times a week.
- Rehabilitation services provides physical,
occupational, and speech therapy
as needed. - Unit coordinators provide all clerical services, and unit assistants support the professional staff to assure that your hospital stay is as comfortable as possible.
- Social workers are available for emotional support and to advise and assist with making community referrals as needed.
- Care coordinators assist families in making arrangements for any medical assistance they may require after going home.
- Family advisors work collaboratively with hospital leadership to identify ways to
enhance care. - Patient advocates respond to any patient concerns or issues.
- Concierge personnel are a valuable resource for both patients and visitors. They can recommend a local hotel, call a taxi, help with a flower delivery, and much more.
- Birth registrars will assure completion of your baby’s birth certificate information in compliance with state law.
- Volunteers work throughout the hospital, as advocates, in the gift shops, transporting patients, and in many other capacities.
