Walking the Talk, Part Two
If actions speak louder than words, then South Shore Hospitals actions would have been deafening in 2003. The common thread through all of them is to fulfill our most important mission: excellent care for patients.
- We opened a comprehensive Breast Care Center in affiliation with Brigham
and Womens Hospital/Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the only one of its kind in Southeastern Massachusetts.
- We earned state approval to open the Commonwealths newest neonatal intensive care unit the first and only NICU for families of our region outside Boston, and the first approved in a community hospital. The unit is one of several of our programs affiliated with Childrens Hospital, Boston.
- We advanced Maternal-Fetal Medicine with our own program, headed by a physician specialized in perinatology, for women experiencing high-risk pregnancies, in affiliation with Tufts-New England Medical Center.
- We created a gynecology-oncology program for women with cancers of the reproductive system, as well as an infectious disease management program, both in affiliation with Brigham
and Womens Hospital.
-
We assured that the care of every ICU patient is managed by physicians board-certified in critical care medicine, by establishing and staffing a department of critical care medicine.
- We earned recognition from the independent Leapfrog Group for being one of five Massachusetts hospitals making significant progress in meeting patient safety practices.
- We enhanced our technology by opening an onsite Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) center, introducing Positron Emission Tomography (PET) services for cancer patients, and by preparing for the addition of a light-speed CT scanner.
-
We achieved a positive financial operating margin for South Shore Hospital:
- We concluded The Promise Campaign, the largest capital fundraising drive ever for South Shore Hospital, or in our region. It generated $16.4 million in gifts from 24,000 donors, 16,000 of whom were first-time givers to the hospital.
These achievements would be impossible without support. We are grateful: To our patients and their families, for trusting us with their lives. To our board, led by Atty. Jacqueline Haley for its focus on what really matters patient care and for its confidence in us. To our medical staff, led by Dr. Russell Kelley, for its devotion and vision, especially in advancing care for our sickest patients. To our Foundation board, led by Elena Kirkiles, for its enthusiasm in generating the support so important to our mission. To our donors, volunteers, and members of The Friends, for giving their time, talent, and treasure. To our employees and volunteer team, for being the best, bar none, anywhere.
There is a difference? You bet there is. Thank you for making it possible.
